Fire engine and bus attacked in separate incidents

A fire engine had its windscreen broken when it was attacked by stone throwers near Ormeau Avenue in Belfast on Thursday evening.

The appliance was responding to a vehicle fire, which it is thought was used to lure the fire crew into the area.

The fire engine was put out of action for several hours while repairs were completed.

The fire service have warned that with vital fire appliances being damaged on a daily basis in the Belfast area there is a risk that areas of the city may be left without full cover if essential emergency response vehicles are put out of action.

Earlier on Thursday a bus driver was injured when an air pellet or ball bearing smashed through a window and struck him in the eye.

It is understood that the bus driver suffered no permanent damage to the eye, but Translink spokesperson Ciaran Rogan said these incidents could cause fatalities if a driver lost control of a bus on a busy city street.

He praised the bus driver's courage and appealed to people to think through the consequences of their actions.
