£1.2m Regeneration 'Boost' For Kilkeel
Northern Ireland Regeneration Minister Margaret Ritchie has unveiled a £1.2m public realm "boost" for Kilkeel, to improve "unattractive" parts of the town centre.
Works planned for the area include the undergrounding of cables; upgrading of footpaths; increased lighting; and improvements to street furniture.
The scheme covers Newry Street, Newcastle Street, Bridge Street and Greencastle Street.
Public consultation on the plans will begin during March 2009. Work is then expected to start in April 2009 and finish by March 2010.
Ms Ritchie said: "This is a great boost for Kilkeel. It will see major changes in Kilkeel town centre, making it more appealing to residents, businesses and visitors.
"I want our towns across Northern Ireland to be places which provide opportunities for all. Kilkeel is no different.
"This major investment of around £1.2m is designed to target areas that are perceived as unattractive, yet have the potential to act as a catalyst in reinvigorating the town centre to improve trading conditions and encourage private sector investment in Kilkeel."
The major Public Realm Improvement scheme is being implemented by the Department for Social Development's Regional Development Office, in partnership with Newry and Mourne District Council.
