Energy Price Cuts Predicted
Speculation is mounting that energy prices in the province could be slashed as early as next month.
SDLP leader Mark Durkan hinted that gas prices for Northern Ireland customers could drop by around by 20%, with electricity tariffs expected to fall in the region of 10%.
In the past year energy prices have increased by around 50% - rises that are currently under review by the utility regulator.
Despite reports of price cuts, Mr Durkan has insisted the Stormont Executive must still deliver fuel payments to the most vulnerable households.
The local cabinet has continued to discuss means of elevating energy stress on poverty stricken constituents worst affected by the economic downturn.
Communities Minister Margaret Ritchie has put forward a number of proposals to ministerial colleagues, but these have been criticised for unduly raising expectations.
Talks aimed at finding a solution to economic strife are expected to continue over the weekend, with an Executive meeting scheduled for Monday.
Mr Durkan said the devolved institutions must not leave the job of tackling fuel poverty to energy companies.
