Fermanagh man is Modern Apprentice of 2002
A young man from County Fermanagh has been named as the 2002 Modern Apprentice of the Year.
Engineering trainee, 20-year-old Gordon Wiggins from Roslea in County Fermanagh, received his award from the Minister for Employment and Learning, at an awards ceremony held recently in Belfast.
The Modern Apprenticeships Programme, now in its second year, is a joint initiative involving the Department for Employment and Learning and the Northern Ireland Training Councils Association (NITCA).
The scheme was developed to recognise the exceptional calibre and reward the efforts and commitment of young people currently training under the Modern Apprenticeship (MA) umbrella.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Hanna, said: “In this fast changing world, it is more important than ever to raise the levels of skills and competence of our young people through the attainment of National Vocational Qualifications and relevant key skills.
“Modern Apprenticeships embrace these qualifications and equip young people with advanced occupational skills and broader key skills now required by industry and essential for the flexible workforce which is critical to Northern Ireland’s international competitiveness.”
Intake numbers on the MA programme in Northern Ireland have more than doubled since last year with over 5,500 young people currently involved, all of them in full time jobs while in training.
As 2002 Modern Apprentice of the Year, Gordon was presented with the NITCA perpetual trophy, commemorative plaque and a multi-media PC supplied by Fujitsu Services.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
