Dublin Bus Makes Cut Backs On Service And Jobs

Dublin Bus has announced it is to cut 290 jobs and reduce its fleet by 120 buses.

The move comes following a year of losses for the state-owned company. A spokesman for Dublin bus also said the firm would not be paying the 3.5% increase under the national pay award scheme due in April.

Although no routes will be removed, some services will be amalgamated with the frequency of some buses being adjusted in some areas.

A review of Dublin Bus's services in the city identified trends such as a sharp decline in passenger numbers as employment contracted, growth in newly developing areas of the city and a reduction in consumer spending.

The new plans are due to come into effect in March and Dublin Bus said it will be informing the public about the changes.

The unions representing the firm's workforce have said they will oppose any compulsory redundancies and work to protect jobs saying they will consider these and other cost-cutting proposals in the coming days.
