Chief Constable appoinment interviews conclude
UPDATE: Huge Orde is new PSNI Chief Constable
The Policing Board has concluded the round of interviews and are shortly expected to announce who is to be Northern Ireland’s new Chief Constable.
Three officers, two from Northern Ireland and one from England, were interviewed for the last time today by seven members of the Policing Board.
Board chairman Professor Des Rea was expected to make the final decision known at around 6pm.
The deadline for applications for the £130,000 a year post of Chief Constable expired on Wednesday April 10 with only a few contenders in the ring.
PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan and senior officer Chris Albiston, who recently returned to the force from secondment in Kosovo, have both applied for the post. Senior Metropolitan police officer Hugh Orde, who leads the investigation into the murder of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane, has also applied.
Hugh Orde, 43, who is a deputy assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan Police has spent two-and-a-half years reinvestigating the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane.
PSNI Acting Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn announced earlier in the year that he would not be applying for the top post. Mr Cramphorn said that it had become apparent to him that the Policing Board were looking for "a style and type of chief constable that he could never be".
Mr Cramphorn took over the position of Acting Chief Constable when Sir Ronnie Flanagan retired at the end of March.

Closer links forged in cross-border crime fight

Proposals to arm officers with CS spray considered
Unionists have reacted favourably to proposals currently being considered by the Northern Ireland Policing Board in which PSNI officers will be equipped with CS spray to control public order situations. DUP Policing Board member Ian Paisley Jr said he had raised the issue at a board meeting in November and backed the move as a "sensible measure".

Sinn Féin to meet Orde on collusion
Sinn Féin spokesperson on policing issues Gerry Kelly today confirmed that his party would meet with the PSNI Chief Constable Hugh Orde next week. Mr Kelly said that the meeting would discuss in some detail the implications of the Police Ombudsman report into collusion.
