Illegal cigarettes seized at Belfast docks
Last night Customs and Excise officers seized three million duty free cigarettes in a consignment of furniture arriving at the Port of Belfast via Antwerp.
The “Yes” cigarettes were in a container consigned to a company in County Armagh. Two men have been detained and enquiries are continuing.
In March 2000, the Government invested an additional £209 million to tackling tobacco smuggling.
The cash boost provided Customs with almost 1,000 more officers and a national network of the latest x-ray scanners flexibly deployed throughout the UK.
This national strategy aims to put cigarette smuggling into decline within three years.
On July 1, 2001, the ‘UK Duty Paid’ mark became a legal requirement on all cigarette and hand-rolling tobacco packets bought and sold in the UK. It is now an offence to possess, sell, deal, transport or store cigarettes or hand-rolling tobacco without the pack mark or for premises to be used for the sale of unmarked products.
A £3 million publicity campaign was launched in September 2000 to raise general public awareness of tobacco smuggling as well as sending hard messages to smugglers and potential smugglers.

More than three million cigarettes smuggled into Northern Ireland concealed in a consignment of plate glass sheets have been seized in Belfast. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) recovered 3,175,400 counterfeit cigarettes over the weekend, from a container arriving in Belfast Docks from China.

Customs seize 15 million cigarettes at Belfast docks
Customs officers have seized nearly 15 million smuggled cigarettes which were intercepted at Belfast Port. Customs officials said they believed the duty free cigarettes, which were intercepted in a consignment of clay pots from Holland, would have been sold illegally in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
