Flights Cancelled As Snow Hits Air Travel
In advance of wintry weather that is expected to hit overnight, there are delays and cancellations to some flights in and out of Northern Ireland this morning because of heavy snow already apparent in England.
Monday morning's Aer Lingus flights to and from Heathrow at Belfast International Airport were cancelled today and at the City of Derry Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport, flights to and from Stansted were also cancelled.
Things were so bad in Great Britain that Heathrow Airport had to shut both of its runways and while Gatwick and Stansted airports remained open, fewer aircraft were able to take off.
Over the weekend, 23 flights had to be cancelled and 18 diverted to other airports after Gatwick closed its runway for two hours on Sunday evening.
In a further development some NI-bound passengers were last night reported to be among hundreds of travellers delayed in a ferry off the coast of the Republic.
The Irish Ferries service from Cherbourg to Rosslare spent the evening in stormy waters close to the port due to engine troubles.
