Airport security staff threaten to stage further action
Tension between security staff and their employers ICTS over pay at Belfast International Airport has stepped up a gear with workers reportedly set to stage another strike next week.
Belfast International Airport (BIA) said they were informed by ICTS, the aviation security firm that is employed by BIA to supply airport security, that security staff plans to take industrial action from midnight Wednesday 29, May 2002 for a period of three days until midnight on Saturday 1 June 2002.
Yesterday nine security staff were sacked by ICTS for taking part in “unofficial action of Tuesday May 14.”
In a statement the ICTS finance director and company secretary Ben Lewis said: “Following the unofficial action of 14th May which has been repudiated by the AGTWU disciplinary proceedings for gross misconduct were initiated against a number of employees of whom have now been dismissed.”
Over recent weeks there has been several stoppages by workers at the airport over pay.
A bout of fresh talks over pay conditions involving security staff took place at the Labour Relations Agency last week in an effort to resolve the issue, but the strike was resumed on Tuesday May 14 following unsatisfactory negotiations.
Union shop steward Gordon McNeill was one of 23 security workers who attended disciplinary hearings after they went on strike on Tuesday May 14. The workers were then suspended by ICTS.
Speaking on a radio programme Mr Mc Neill said he felt “victimised and singled out”.
He said: “Twenty-two officers were suspended when 42 officers took part in the strike. And around eight have now been sacked. We’re very keen to find out how these people have been sacked.”

SF Calls For Action On NI Mental Health Services
Sinn Féin has called for more to be done to improve mental health services across the north of Ireland. The party's mental health spokesperson, MLA Órlaithí Flynn, made the call after the release of the Registrar General's 2023 Annual Report which has highlighted an increase in deaths by suicide in 2023.
