Historic heritage celebrated at awards ceremony
Thirty well-kept listed buildings across Northern Ireland have won DOE Environment & Heritage Service (EHS) Conservation Awards in a ceremony held today at the historic Hillsborough Courthouse.
Thatched cottages in rural Fermanagh, a stately mansion house in the Ards Peninsula, workers’ cottages at Tyrone Corn Mill, and Belfast’s Albert Clock were some of the winners at the event, which forms part of a series of events celebrating 30 Years of Listed Buildings in Northern Ireland.
Dermot Nesbitt, the Minister of the Environment, was on hand to present the owners of the thirty buildings with the DOE Environment & Heritage Service Conservation Awards.
He said: "Listed buildings make a very positive contribution to our environment and I hope these awards will provide an opportunity for their owners to show how they have conserved and continue to look after their listed buildings. Many of these schemes have received my Department’s Environment and Heritage Service staff expert advice and grant aid.
He added: “Our heritage is richly diverse and this is reflected in today’s award-winning wide selection of buildings.
"Once again it highlights that people care about our built heritage. We all can be proud of Northern Ireland’s listed buildings and we should take great care to see them preserved."

Funding Boost For Historic Buildings
Environment Minister Alex Attwood today raised the cap on grant-aid for listed buildings from £50,000 to £150,000. This will come as a significant boost for owners of listed buildings and it will open up the opportunity for many more listed buildings to get improvement works.

Belfast council welcomes 'spot-listing' of historic buildings
Belfast City Council has welcomed plans to introduce ‘spot-listing’ of historic buildings and increased penalties for developers who demolish listed buildings. The Council’s Development (Arts) Sub-Committee met with NIO Environment Minister Angela Smith to lobby for the increased protection of the city’s historic buildings.
