Shopping Centre Volunteers Aid Ugandan Kids

A nine-day 'building blitz' in Uganda that is being organised by Rushmere Shopping Centre in Co Armagh was given 'international support' this week. Centre staff Mary Irwin, Sarah McGibbon, Carrie McKeown and Centre Manager Martin Walsh met Ulster rugby Captain and Ireland International Rory Best (pictured) who pledged his support for their June trip to join 25 other volunteers who work in the centre as they head to Uganda and build a primary school for over 400 disadvantaged Ugandan children.

One Man Freed In Mongan Killing Probe

The 45-year-old man who was being questioned by police about the death of John Mongan in Belfast last year has been released without charge. However, a 42-year-old man, who was also arrested in Fermanagh on Tuesday, remained in custody last night. Mr Mongan was beaten and stabbed to death in front of his heavily pregnant wife in a house at Fallswater Street. Two men aged 32 and 36 and a 15-year-old boy have been charged with the 30-year-old's murder.

Food Lovers Champ At The Bit For Spuds

More varieties of potato than you could shake a bowl of champ at will be on display at a celebration of 'spuds' in Crawfordsburn Country Park at the weekend. Over 100 varieties of potatoes as well as an incredible variety of seed potatoes will be on show as well as cooking demonstrations to show the range of dishes that can be created with potatoes will be ongoing throughout the weekend. Family entertainment includes live music, dancing, arts and crafts, games and activities. The event will run on Saturday 21 February and Sunday 22 February from 11.00am-4.00pm at the visitor centre. Admission is free.

Robinson Goes Back To SChool

Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson was back to school yesterday to meet pupils of the award-winning Newtownards Model Primary School. The Minister toured the primary school, the first here to achieve the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency Information and Communication Technology Award, commenting: "Newtownards Model Primary is the modern benchmark that we must judge our primary schools by. I congratulate Newtownards Model Primary School on their success in achieving this prestigious ICT Mark."

Court Date Over Robbery Allegations

A 27-year-old man has been charged in connection with a spate of robberies in the Belfast area. The accused faces 12 counts of robbery and 11 counts of possessing an offensive weapon. Police said the robberies, which were largely at commercial premises, occurred between December 2008 and February 2009. The accused man was due to appear at Laganside Magistrates Court.

Heavy Snow Closes Over 80 Schools
Over 80 schools across Northern Ireland have been closed as the heavy snow continues to cause disruption on Tuesday morning. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning, as the snow is continuing to affect many roads. Areas which have been majorly disrupted include Lisburn, Castlereagh and Carryduff.

Fire At L'Derry Primary School Being Treated As Suspicious
A fire at a L'Derry primary school is believed to have been started deliberately. The fire at the Good Shepherd Primary School, in the Waterside area of the city, was reported shortly before 8pm on Wednesay night, 10 August.

Final Roll Call For Two Primary Schools
Two Co Antrim primary schools are to close because of falling rolls. The Sinn Fein Education Minister, John O'Dowd, has approved a proposal to close Lourdes Primary School, Whitehead: "I have agreed to the closure [because of] a decline in enrolments in recent years [that] has given rise to concern.

New £8.3m Saint Patrick's Primary School Opened
Education Minister Michelle McIlveen has officially opened the new £8.3 million Saint Patrick's Primary School in Belfast. The new school, which has 21 classrooms, was formed following the amalgamation of Edmund Rice Christian Brothers and Star of the Sea primary schools.
