Woman Dies In Lisburn House Fire

An absent battery in a smoke detector may have been a crucial element in a fatal fire in Co Antrim this morning.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the blaze in the centre of Lisburn that left a 43-year-old woman dead.

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster this morning, Mark McGranaghan, Lisburn Group Commander with the NI Fire & Rescue Service, said there was a fire alarm in the house, but the battery had been removed.

He underlined the vitally important role of maintaining a working fire alarm, as that would give early warning of such an incident.

He also said there are no indications yet as to how the fire started and that "PSNI colleagues and fire service personnel will be examining the scene this morning" to help in the probe.

The fire broke out at a mid terrace house in Smithfield Street at about 1.30am on Monday.

The fire brigade in Lisburn were on the scene inside five minutes of receiving the call and reported the fire to be "well established" on arrival.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus were committed to the house immediately and the victim was found upstairs. The woman was alone in the house at the time.

"The crew removed her from the upstairs bedroom and handed her to the ambulance service. Our thoughts are with her family now," he said.

It isn't known if she was still alive at this time.
