Policewoman Escapes Checkpoint Drive Through

It was only by good luck that a policewoman escaped after a car drove through a checkpoint in Larne at the weekend. The officer was forced to dive to safety when the vehicle ignored a flagging down signal and drove at speed directly towards her. The incident occurred on the junction of the Shore Road and Island Road in the Co Antrim town at approximately 8.45pm on Friday evening. Police had sealed off the area following an earlier alleged assault. The red Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned and a 34-year-old man was arrested, but later bailed.

Adams Warns 'Criminal' Bankers

The weekend Sinn Féin Ard Fheis saw the party's President Gerry Adams calling for bank executives to be "brought before the courts if they are found to have broken the law". Mr Adams told delegates at his party's annual conference that "all categories of gangsters or banksters must face the full rigours of the law". He also called on the Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan to resign. His comments came after a report into Anglo-Irish Bank found 15 customers owe the bank more than 500m euro each. Earlier at the conference, Stormont Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said Northern Ireland was "no longer an orange state, but an orange and green state". He told delegates that "evolution, like climate change, was undeniable".

Lurgan Improvement Scheme Complete

The second phase of an environmental improvement project has been completed on a Lurgan housing estate. The work at Ardown was undertaken by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and saw £1.5m invested in the area. Phase one cost £950,000 and benefited 71 homes. The more recent phase two received £630,000 worth of funding and improved living conditions for 39 social tenants.
