Reid opens Mount Vernon Community Centre
Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Dr John Reid, has praised the people of Mount Vernon in North Belfast for their determination in transforming eight derelict flats into a new community centre.
In March, Dr Reid attended the launch of “The New Mucky Field” at the Mount Vernon estate and accepted an invite to open the new community centre.
Fulfilling that promise on Monday morning, the Secretary of State said: “This new community centre is a shining example of your determination and commitment to improve the quality of life for everyone in the Mount Vernon area.
“I am full of admiration for everyone who has contributed and been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.
“You have succeeded in transforming derelict flats into a state of the art community centre, which is used on a daily basis to benefit the whole community.
“I am delighted and honoured that you have invited me along to open this centre and share in what is a very proud day for the Mount Vernon community.”

Man Escapes Injury After 'Suspected' Gun Jams In North Belfast
A man has escaped injury after a suspected gun jammed during an attempted shooting attack in north Belfast. The incident occurred at Mount Vernon Lane at around 10.20pm on Wednesday. Two masked men forced the victim to the ground and produced a gun. When the attacker attempted to fire the weapon it is believed to have jammed.

Second man remanded over loyalist shooting
A second man has today been charged with the attempted murder of leading loyalist Mark Haddock last Tuesday. Ronald Trevor Bowe, 29, and from Mount Vernon Gardens has also been reported to the Public Prosecution Service for alleged membership of the UVF. Mr Bowe replied "not guilty" when the charge was put to him today at Belfast Magistrates Court.

Father In Uproar Over Community Funding
The father of a murdered schoolboy has urged the Irish government to change its decision over funding to a loyalist community. 15-year-old Thomas Devlin was stabbed in the back five times as he walked home in 10 August 2005, and no one has been convicted of the murder.
