Broughshane announce Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations

Following the Queen's recent visit to Northern Ireland as part of her Golden Jubilee tour, villages and towns around the province are gearing up for events to celebrate the Jubilee Holiday weekend.

Among the first to announce their events was Broughshane's Golden Jubilee Committee who are set to stage a four-day event in the Country Antrim village to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The Community Jubilee Festival, from Saturday June 1 to Tuesday June 4, is being organised by Broughshane Community Association, in conjunction with Ballymena Borough Council's Golden Jubilee Sub-Committee. The festival will aim to offers something for everyone, in what promises to be one of the biggest Golden Jubilee events in Northern Ireland.

On Saturday June 1, the village is expecting thousands of visitors for the 'Jubilee Cavalcade' of floats, vintage vehicles, and fancy dress when all businesses and groups are encouraged to take part. The evening will end with a Jubilee Barbecue and Dance in the local Community Centre, entry will be on a ticket only basis.

Sunday afternoon will see a Jubilee Community Service in support of Queen's Golden Jubilee nominated charities. The service led by The Salvation Army will be held at Broughshane Community Centre and among those taking part will be the Broughshane Children's Community Choir.

Organisers say that with television coverage arranged for Monday June 3, the Golden Jubilee Street Party will start around 6.30pm. Families or groups can book tables at £10 per table and the local committee will provide appropriate decoration and party hats, with the people bringing their own food.

At 9.30pm the Mayor of Ballymena will light a beacon at 'The Prince of Wales Garden' in the centre of the village. Timed to coincide with the Queen lighting a similar Beacon in London, the beacon will be lit in conjunction with a number of similar events throughout the UK.

The Street Party will end with a spectacular Golden Jubilee Fireworks Display at 11pm at the Buttermilk Bridge Riverside Park.

Tuesday June 4 will also bring many visitors to see the Borough's 'Inter-Village – It's A Knockout' competition, which will be staged with professional equipment being shipped over from England.
