Spanish Teenager Saved In Portrush Rock Fall
A teenage student, who is from Spain, was the centre of a major air and sea rescue at the weekend.
The 14-year-old girl was recovering on Sunday after being rescued after she suffered a fall on Northern Ireland's north coast. The teen - who is on a visit to Northern Ireland - was clambering over rocks near Portrush in an area known as Port na Happle, when she slipped and injured herself.
Her friends raised the alarm and both Portrush lifeboats were launched and an Irish coastguard helicopter was scrambled from Sligo.
However, paramedics and a coastguard team got to the girl first and managed to carry her across the rocks by stretcher.
Two local people who had gone to the teenager's aid and two of her friends were also helped to safety.
The girl was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, Co Antrim for treatment to injuries which were not believed to be life threatening.
Coastguard station officer Chris Little said: "Even though this only involved one casualty this was a full scale rescue.
"There were approximately a dozen people at the scene carrying out the rescue and in order to make sure that they were safe, should something have happened to them, we made sure all the other units were in place."
