Homecoming Beat War Trauma

The controversial 'Homecoming' parade staged for local service personnel returning from Afghanistan last November has been claimed as having a "massive impact on their wellbeing". A senior Army officer said this week that not "a single Royal Irish soldier is suffering post-traumatic stress after returning", largely because of the vast homecoming parades. Crowds estimated at up to 50,000 thronging the centre of Belfast to support the troops and in a subsequent interview with the Belfast News Letter, Lieutenant Colonel Ed Freely has said that the astonishing outpouring of public support at a series of parades - but particularly in Belfast on November 2 - for the troops had made a major impact far "greater than that of psychiatric experts". Donegal Gardaí In Crackdown

A gun has been recovered and three men have been arrested for questioning about crime in west Donegal. The men, aged between 18 and 22 years, were held at three separate locations in the greater Bunbeg area on Sunday afternoon. A shotgun and a pistol were also recovered. Gardaí said the arrests were part of an investigation into crime in west Donegal. Two men are being questioned in Milford and the other is in Letterkenny. The development follows the discovery of an arms cache earlier near the border with Northern Ireland. Gardaí recovered two suspected pipe bombs, four pistols, two revolvers and two sawn-off shotguns in Carrigans near Londonderry on Saturday. On Friday, the post office in Carrigans was robbed by armed men.

Tory/UU Link 'Meaningless'

The Alliance party's Chief Whip Kieran McCarthy has said that the proposed Ulster Unionist -Tory link up is meaningless and offers local people nothing new. He said that given the track record of the UUP they will most likely embarrass the Tories. "This is the same Ulster Unionist Party with the same outdated mindset. A quick name change will make no difference at all. People who want an end to division in our society and want to support a genuinely outward looking party should look to Alliance," he said.
