Dodds Welcomes Support For Lower Rates Cap

The Stormont Assembly has approved regulations to reduce the maximum capital value to £400,000 for rating purposes, from this April. Finance Minister Nigel Dodds welcomed the decision. "It ensures that no one in Northern Ireland will pay more than the average council tax-payer in the highest band in England and so further moderates the effects of the rating system introduced under direct rule. In approving this measure the Assembly appreciates the steps that I have taken to ensure that this does not negatively impact on other ratepayers, such as freezing the regional rate and providing financial assistance to councils to moderate the effect on district rates."

Burlesque Okay With Women

Organisers of a fundraising show for a leading sex-abuse charity have defended plans for a burlesque performer to appear at the event. But, the centre has defended its decision to feature a burlesque showgirl against claims that it is reinforcing the notion that women are sex objects and said the decision to book Amber Topaz is part of a celebration of women.

Skiing Cover Needed, Says PO

Skiers and snowboarders from Northern Ireland who plan to skip travel insurance to cut costs could be leaving themselves open to colossal hospital bills if they have an accident abroad this year, with overseas medical expenses rocketing as a result of sterling's slump in value. According to Post Office Travel Insurance data, 20% of people in Northern Ireland are considering going on holiday this year without travel insurance in order to save money. Post Office Travel Services, a partner of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) 'Know Before You Go' campaign, is therefore urging people to minimise risk by preparing properly for their holiday. Policies can be bought over the counter at more than 10,000 Post Office branches or online.
