'Gallant' RIR Soldiers Recognised

Three soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment have been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. Corporal Robert McClurg, Portavogie, Acting Sergeant Alwyn Stevens and Lance Corporal Jon Toge were among 18 Royal Irish soldiers honoured. The men were given the awards, in part, for their work mentoring the Afghan National Army in Helmand. Military Crosses were also awarded to two Royal Irish soldiers. Policing Board Chairman 'Gives Notice'

While the period of office of the current NI Policing Board Chairman Professor Sir Desmond Rea and Vice Chairman Barry Gilligan comes to an end on 30 April, the Board, has agreed to extend the period of office of these posts to facilitate the recruitment and selection of a new Deputy Chief Constable (DCC) for the PSNI. Sir Desmond had advised the Board he would not be seeking re-election to the post of Chairman. However, he will remain as an independent member of the Board for the period of his appointment. "I will now be stepping down from this role when the DCC appointment process is completed," he said.

Fostering Food

The NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster is set to lead a business mission from the local food sector to London's prestigious International Food Exhibition (IFE) 2009. She will visit the major food show, which takes place from 15 - 18 March, where over 20 local companies will be represented in an Invest Northern Ireland delegation. She made her announcement following a visit to Erne Eggs, Lisnaskea, where she welcomed a £2million investment by the company, in conjunction with two food companies from the Republic of Ireland. A new company, Ready Egg Products, is a joint venture between Lisnaskea-based Erne Eggs, Irish Egg Products of Kilcoole, Co Wicklow and Greenfield Foods, Smithborough, Co Monaghan.

Jobs On The Line

One hundred jobs are at risk at a Belfast call centre, a union has claimed. Unite say that the jobs are under threat at Capita after Prudential did not renew a contract with the company. "The announcement affects 102 Capita staff of the 250 employed in Beacon House." according to a statement from Capita. "We are today entering into a consultation with staff to consider next steps."

Farm Student Exchange Praised

NI Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew has congratulated CAFRE, Greenmount Campus and Kildalton College, Kilkenny on the first week-long exchange between agriculture students north and south. Speaking at an exchange dinner sponsored by the Farmers Union, the Minister said: "This student exchange shows the commitment of CAFRE and Kildalton College to developing the next generation of farmers who will be well-equipped to compete in a global industry. I would also thank the Farmers Union for their support of this exchange. They too recognise that well-trained, competent and innovative students are the future of the agriculture sector. I know that CAFRE and our colleagues in the Teagasc colleges are best placed to deliver successful farmers of the future."

Portavogie Play Park Opens

A new £80,000 play area has been opened in Portavogie, Co Down. Climbers, slides, seesaws, a variety of swings and other equipment, all with a nautical theme, were installed at the new site in the village's Anchor Car Park. The facility is the first to be completed under Ards Borough Council's drive to revamp the area's play parks in the next year, at a total cost of close to £1m. The Portavogie project was funded through money obtained from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development's Fishing Villages Taskforce Scheme, and forms part of an overall scheme involving development of the Northern promenade and new business units in Princess Anne Road.

Vote of confidence for NI news services
A study of television and other news sources in the UK has found that only 4% of Northern Ireland viewers are dissatisfied with the provision of local news services. The research carried out by the Independent Television Commission (ITC) and Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) found this was the lowest dissatisfaction rate in the UK.

Dog Food Meat Found In Human Food Chain
A government report has revealed that meat meant for dog food is thought to have ended up in the human food chain. The discovery was made in an "industrial-scale" fraud carried out in the region.

Taste Of Ulster Gets Cash Boost
A £150,000 support package for several projects promoting the quality of local food - such as the successful Taste of Ulster scheme - has been announced by the Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill. The Minister made the announcement today as she met with one of the beneficiaries of the funding support, Food NI.

Belfast food outlets to be rated online
Eating establishments in Belfast are soon to be rated on a new website to be set up by Belfast City Council. The website, which will be known as 'Scores on the Doors', will provide a facility for consumers to be able check whether the standard of the food served at the premises is up to scratch.
