Pensioner Attacked In Own Home
An elderly woman has been assaulted and pushed to the ground during an attempted robbery at her home in west Belfast. Police are investigating the incident shortly before 11.30pm on Monday when two hooded men forced their way into the house at Islandbawn Road. The pair pushed the woman to the ground and demanded money, but left empty-handed. Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed any suspicious in the area or has any information about the incident to contact them.
Accused Dentist Further Remanded
The dentist accused of murdering his wife and his ex-lover's husband was again remanded in custody for another four weeks in a fresh court hearing. Dr Colin Howell, aged 50, appeared at North Antrim Magistrates' Court via a video link from Maghaberry Prison, on Monday. He is also due to appear before District Judge Richard Wilson again on April 6, the same day as his co-accused, Hazel Stewart, 45, who is also facing a double murder charge. Mr Howell is also being investigated in connection with two other deaths. See: Another Death Probed Over Dentist Murder Case
Derry 'Day Trippers' Down
Figures just released by the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau have shown the number of people making enquiries at the Tourist Information Centre dropped by more than 3,000 last year. The Services Manager Odhran Dunne said last year had been "a challenging year for tourism not just for the island of Ireland but globally." Mr Dunne said despite the drop in numbers the tourism sector still generated almost £30 million for the city's economy in 2008. However, preliminary statistics show approximately 78,000 enquiries were made at Derry's TIC last year - compared with 81,448 in 2007. On a more positive point, the figures also reveal there was a 16% increase in the number of international visitors.
Burning Questions On Pollution
A proposed waste incinerator on Belfast Lough will be an expensive source of pollution and pose long-term health risks, environmental campaigners claimed yesterday. Belfast City Council is considering making land at the North Foreshore, Co Antrim, available to produce energy from rubbish. Burning waste emits pollutants but according to health experts has little effect on health. However, Niall Bakewell, from Friends of the Earth, said: "Burning waste produces myriad toxins, including dioxins, heavy metals and furans."
