Match Ban Kicked Into Touch

The contentious decision to ban Glentoran and Linfield playing on public holidays for two years has been overturned. The JJB Sports Premiership's top two clubs appealed the ban which had been imposed by the Irish FA's disciplinary committee on 16 February. An appeals panel described the sanction as unjust and inappropriate. However, the £1,000 fine on each clubs still stands and they face a penalty of up to £40,000 if crowd trouble occurs at future holiday fixtures. The disciplinary measures followed disturbances at the Linfield v Glentoran derby on 26 December.

Pair Held Over East Belfast Stabbing

A man and woman have been arrested following the suspicious death of a man in east Belfast. The pair were arrested on Tuesday afternoon following the discovery of the body of a 46-year-old man in a house in the Maymount Street area of the city. Police have refused to comment on details of the death of the man - but it is understood that he was stabbed during an argument in a house on Monday night. A post mortem is due to be carried out on the remains of the man, who has not been named by police, to establish a cause of death. The area was cordoned off as a forensic team combed the property for clues regarding the death of the man.

Ritchie Meets Homeless

Northern Ireland's Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie yesterday paid tribute to the work of the Lurgan Foyer, a housing project for homeless young people. Lurgan Foyer is a project to help homeless people move back into independent living and work. It gives young homeless people the chance to realise their full potential by delivering a holistic service that integrates accommodation with training, job search, personal support and motivation. During a visit to the project at Mount Zion House, Margaret Ritchie said: "The New Housing Agenda is all about delivering opportunity and choice for all members of society. That is why supported housing projects like this continue to be so important. All young people need a springboard into independent living, learning and work. For those who don't get that help, Foyer fills the gap."

Ards Housing Boost

New life has been injected into a Newtownards housing estate, following an additional £1.6m investment by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. Renovations being carried out on properties in the Westwinds Estate as part of a major £10m improvement scheme, have now entered its third phase. NIHE District Manager Owen Brady said the £10m regeneration strategy for Westwinds, is currently progressing very well and is expected to be completed during the first half of 2010. Dodds To Review NI Land And Property Services

Stormont Finance Minister Nigel Dodds has commissioned a review of the government agency Land & Property Services. The review, the latest to be undertaken by the Performance and Efficiency Delivery Unit, will assess the capacity of the agency to meet current and future challenges. Mr Dodds said: "Land & Property Services undertakes a number of key roles, including the collection of rates from domestic and non-domestic properties. This means that the agency directly engages with all local households and businesses on an annual basis. Given the complexity and scale of the work it is involved in, I believe it is essential that we assure ourselves the agency is structured and managed in a way that is focused on the delivery of its important objectives," said the Minister.
