Police Hold Summit On Dissident Threat
Today's scheduled security summit between the island's two top police chiefs was dominated by the recent dissident attacks in Northern Ireland.
PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde met with Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy (pictured here) in Belfast this morning to discuss ongoing collaboration between their two forces.
The talks were arranged prior to three brutal murders in the province, for which dissident republicans groups have since claimed responsibility.
Two soldiers were gunned down in Antrim on Saturday night, as they collected a pizza delivery at the front of the Massereene army barracks.
Four others, including two civilians, were wounded when terrorists sprayed 60 bullets at the front of the base.
The families of Sapper Mark Quinsey, 23, from Birmingham and Sapper Patrick Azimkar, 21, from Wood Green, north London, have since visited the scene of their murder.
The bodies of the two soldiers are expected to be flown back to England later today.
On Monday evening a police officer was murdered in Craigavon while responding to an emergency call.
The funeral of Constable Stephen Carroll, who was shot in the head in the ambush, will take place tomorrow.
PSNI and Gardai officials frequently share cross border intelligence information, today's talks focused on the upsurge in republican violence.
Sir Hugh Orde said: "The relationship is excellent. We are determined to bring those responsible for the despicable murders over the last week to justice."
Commissioner Murphy said an attack on a police officer was an "attack on the whole of society".
He said link between the PSNI and his officers had been "growing steadily and surely over recent years".
The Commissioner will be joined by Irish Justice Minister Dermot Ahern for the funeral mass of Constable Carroll in Banbridge tomorrow.
