New US Visa Scheme Announced

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has announced plans for a new working visa arrangement between Ireland and the US.

Speaking to a gathering of leading Irish Americans in New York, the Taoiseach said efforts are getting underway to agree a new method of trading working visas.

Mr Cowen said he wanted a new visa arrangement between the two countries, which would allow Irish people to live and work in the US for as much as two years and Americans to come and work in Ireland for the same period.

The visa proposal is part of a major review of Irish-American relations which will also include an increased diplomatic presence by Ireland in key US cities.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has also played down concerns that a 'protectionist agenda' by the Obama administration could lead to job losses in Ireland.

There are fears that attempts by the new US President to keep jobs at home could damage the Irish economy.

The issue is likely to be on the agenda when Mr Cowen meets President Obama in the White House tomorrow.
