22nd NI Road Victim Dies
The woman seriously injured in a road collision involving a car and a lorry in east Belfast last month has died in hospital.
She was the 22nd person to die on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year and has been named as 42-year-old Mary Cooper, also known as Mary Ayre. She lived at Ardcarn Way in east Belfast.
The accident happened on Wednesday 18 February on the Upper Newtownards Road.
Following her death, the police have again appealed for witnesses to the collision, which occurred at about 9.45pm, to contact them.
Meanwhile, despite the first motorcycle 'Bikesafe' event this year being held at the weekend, two motorcyclist have been involved in serious accidents, one of them fatal.
Bike rider 27-year-old Gary Mitchell from the Skegoneil area of the Belfast died after a crash happened at North Queen Street, close to its junction with Seaview Street on Sunday evening, near where the crash victim lived.
Another motorcyclist remains in a serious condition in hospital after he collided with a white Mazda car, also on Sunday evening.
The crash happened at around 6pm on the Clontonacally Road in Carryduff.
Bikesafe aims to save the lives of motorcyclists and cut the injury toll among the biking fraternity by providing safety advice during one-to-one assessments.
The practical assessment by an advanced police motorcyclist attempts to highlight and improve riders' awareness of potential dangers and hazards.
The event was held at the Homebase car park in Cookstown on Saturday and was well attended by motorcyclists of all ages and levels.
It was backed by Cookstown District Policing Partnership members and is the first of several such Bikesafe events that will be held throughout Northern Ireland over the summer.
