Child Road Fatality Named

A three-year-old fatally struck by a car in Coleraine has been named as Roma McAleese.

The girl, who was from the Ashdale area of the town, died following the incident last night.

It is believed was playing in Ashdale Park at about 6.45pm when she was hit by the vehicle.

Roma was taken to hospital but died a short time later. The scene has remained closed.

UUP MLA David McClarty expressed his sympathies. Mr McClarty, a friend of the girl's grandparents, said there was "overwhelming sadness" in the community.

"None of us, unless we have lost a child ourself, can even begin to imagine how her parents must be feeling.

"This will have come as a huge blow to the family," he said.

Also reacting to what he described as the third fatality within four days on local roads, Coleraine Sinn Féin councillor Billy Leonard has said that the community has received yet another devastating shock which leaves another family totally shattered.

"The carnage just seems to continue and this news has added poignancy given a three-year-old girl has lost her life.

"I know that all the circumstances vary but it is an incredibly sad reminder that we all can play our part in trying to reduce injuries and fatalities on our roads," he said.
