Blitz Remembered

A sculpture, designed to commemorate those who lost their lives in the WWII Belfast Blitz, has been unveiled. The bronze statue, designed by Belfast artist Carolyn Mulholland, depicts an orphan and a woman who has lost her baby, standing in a mass of fallen planks representing the destruction around them. It was revealed last night at a memorial service to mark the huge loss of life during the air raid by the Luftwaffe in 1941. This week marked the 68th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz and saw hundreds turning up at the Northern Ireland War Memorial building in the Cathedral Quarter to remember more than 1,000 people who died.
