70,000 Visitors Expected At Balmoral Show
This year's Balmoral Show opened its doors this morning.
The agricultural show – described as the largest in Ireland – is expected to attract over 70,000 visitors during the three days of the event.
While welcomed as a showcase for agriculture - described as a "key dynamo in driving manufacturing in Northern Ireland" by Stormont Minister Arlene Foster - the event is also aimed at all the family.
The programme includes a 'Kids Zone' with children's farm and rides, among other activities.
The show organisers, the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society, announced that the main attraction of this year is the performance by the Bolddog Lings, a motorcycle display team.
It will take place in the Main Arena, as well as the International Show Jumping and Falconry displays.
A Spokeswoman for the show said that there will also be "daily displays of pedigree horses, ponies, cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs and goats".
The show, that has over 400 Trade Stands, is hosted at the King's Hall complex, in south Belfast. As every year, heavy traffic is expected around the venue.
PSNI Balmoral Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Rowland said: "If you are planning to attend the show, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to arrive and depart the venue.
"If you are not visiting the event, you may want to avoid the area on the days in question and consider tacking an alternative route," he added.
Moreover, those attending the event are asked to use the designated car parks: Queen's playing fields beside the House of Sport and Belfast Harlequin's playing field, off Deramore Park.
Strangford and Boucher Road car parks are among the other available parking locations. There, buses have been organised to relay motorists to the show.
Speaking on the opening day, NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster has said food and drink processing has become a key dynamo in driving manufacturing in Northern Ireland.
Addressing industry leaders at the Food Promotion Northern Ireland stand, Arlene Foster said: "Despite the huge financial challenges in today's global markets, our local food and drink industry is continuing to perform well.
"From farmer to processor, the food industry is not only achieving for the Northern Ireland economy but is increasingly the key dynamo driving our manufacturing sector," she said, noting that, while output in the local food, drink and tobacco sector here increased by 8.9% in 2008, Great Britain experienced a decrease of 3.3%.
"It also performed better than the broader manufacturing sector, which saw a fall in output of 6.3 % over the same period," she said.
