Stormont Wants To Learn From Catalonia

Representatives of the Northern Ireland Parliament are today meeting their counterparts in Catalonia, writes Ada Cruz Tienda.

Four members of the Committee of the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister (COFDFM) travelled yesterday to Barcelona – on a low cost airline – aiming to learn from the way the devolved Catalan regional government cooperates with the EU. According to UUP MLA Danny Kennedy: "The Northern Ireland Assembly is the only region in the United Kingdom which does not have a European and External Affairs Committee.

"We are meeting with our Catalan government counterparts as part of an inquiry into EU issues and how best Northern Ireland can work with the EU."

Barry McElduff, Naomi Long and Francie Molloy are the other MLAs gathered in Barcelona until Friday.

A spokeswoman for the COFDFM said that the representatives of the Catalan Parliament (pictured here) they are meeting include the President of the Catalan Parliament, Ernest Benach and the Secretary for European Union Affairs of the Government of Catalonia, Anna Terrón.
