Irish Shoppers Boost Banbridge Outlet

An influx of shoppers from the Irish Republic have helped a Co Down shopping centre boost its sales by more than 20%.

The Outlet at Banbridge reported year-on-year sales growth of 21.5%, while average spend was up 13.5%.

Meanwhile, the 'car counts' at the retail outlet centre showed 83% more Irish registered vehicles in the carpark, compared with this time a year ago.

The statistics released today, follow the positive Christmas period results which saw a record 150% increase in Irish traffic at the Outlet.

"Our retailers and the area as a whole are benefiting from a consistent flow of traffic from the South," Euan Forbes, Manager of the Outlet Centre, said.

"There are stages throughout the year where the Outlet is getting more southern visitors than some of Northern Ireland's most popular tourist attractions, these retail tourists are a major factor in our sales growth."

He added: "This is literally a surge in Irish shoppers every weekend and back every Bank Holiday, and not just from Dublin - we are getting coach tours and organised trips from all over the country."
