Sappers' Tragedy Recalled In New Death

One of the latest British serviceman to be killed in Afghanistan was a member of 38 Engineer Regiment.

The unit is based in Northern Ireland and previously lost two members in a terrorist shooting on the eve of their deployment abroad in March.

The latest tragedy saw Jordan Rossi, 22, from Baildon, West Yorkshire, being killed after he was caught in the explosion near Sangin, in Helmand Province, on Saturday evening.

The sapper was the second British serviceman killed in two days while on patrol near Sangin.

The regiment is based at Massereene barracks outside Antrim.

Two of Sapper Rossi's colleagues, Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar, were shot dead outside the facility in March by renegade republican terrorists.

The two soldiers were due to be deployed in Afghanistan the next day and were even wearing desert fatigues.

The soldier killed on Saturday was part of a Royal Engineers search team embedded with the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group in support of 2nd Battalion The Rifles, Battle Group.

He was taking part in an operation to clear improvised explosive devices when he was caught in the blast.

He was evacuated to the field hospital at Camp Bastion but pronounced dead soon after arrival.
