NI Redundancies Soar
The increasing number of NI people joining the dole queue has seen a major impact on redundancy inquiries at local Citizens Advice (CAB) offices.
Across Northern Ireland they have more than trebled year-on-year as the recession continues to bite and the economy nose-dives.
Reflecting a steady increase in the unemployment rate in Northern Ireland, which has climbed from 4.4% in March 2008 to reach 5.7% in March this year, CAB said that demand for advice from people facing the threat of losing their jobs or who had been put on the dole were up by 261%.
While the number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose from 23,900 to 42,000 in a year, the CAB network has handled 3,141 redundancy issues in the year to the end of March, compared with 1,203 in the previous year.
The most dramatic increase had been in January, when the number of inquiries had shot up to almost 500, compared to 140 in January 2008.
The CAB organisation is continuing to press the Stormont Executive to introduce a co-ordinated approach, for the delivery of redundancy advice and information across Northern Ireland.
Citizens Advice Northern Ireland has also produced a series of employment rights fact sheet to help those left out in the cold.
