Hundreds More On The Dole In May
An extra 1,900 people picked up unemployment benefits in Northern Ireland last month, it has been revealed.
The total unemployment figure for the province now stands at 48,000 - a jump of 23,100 since last May.
Just over half of the annual increase (13,300) has occurred in the last six months.
Government officials were notified of 321 confirmed redundancies last month.
This was compares to 545 in April and 155 in May 2008.
There has been a 156% increase in the number of confirmed redundancies over the last year – 4,433 compared to 1,735 in the previous year.
Commenting on the figures, Enterprise Minister, Arlene Foster said: "While unfortunately these figures come as no surprise, it is still very disappointing to note that there have been further falls in employment and increased unemployment in Northern Ireland.
"Global markets are continuing to adjust to the impact of the current downturn and we are still experiencing its negative effects.
"We will continue to provide whatever practical support and advice we can to help businesses through this challenging time," she added.

New figures released for the period September to November 2015 show that the Northern Ireland Labour Force Survey unemployment rate was 5.9%, a drop of 0.1% over the quarter.

Northern Ireland's unemployment rate has fallen to a new low. The latest labour force figures, released today, show that the current unemployment figure has fallen from 6.3% to 5.2% for the period January – March 2004. Employment figures, meanwhile, have increased by 3,000 to 720,000 for the same period.
