DUP To Promote 'Gospel Of Devolution'

Following a disappointing performance at the European polls, the Democratic Unionists Party has vowed to "spread the gospel of devolution".

Unveiling his new Stormont minister team, DUP Leader Peter Robinson (pictured here with Robin Newton) said the Assembly should not pander to "wreckers".

The First Minister said those who seek to bring down the devolved institutions - either through political or violent means - should not succeed.

A reshuffled DUP front line team met for its first full cabinet meeting yesterday.

Mr Robinson said Finance Minister Sammy Wilson, Junior Minister Robin Newton, Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster, Environment Minister Edwin Poots and Culture Minister Nelson McCausland will reach out to the public and promote the benefits of a devolved government.

Traditional Unionist Jim Allister, who opposes the currently institutions at Stormont - namely the mandatory coalition - received over 60,000 first preference votes at the MEP elections.

Despite failing to win a seat, the hardliner has insisted he now speaks for a third of the Unionist electorate.

Mr Robinson, who said the new DUP ministerial team would remain in place until the next assembly elections, refused to be drawn further on the devolution of policing and justice.

The First Minister refused to outline a timetable for the transfer of powers to Stormont, but said the parties were "leading to the situation where it's clear we could identify who the future justice minister might be".
