Assembly Recalled

A special sitting of the Stormont Assembly was held today to highlight Finance Minister Sammy Wilson (pictured) and his delayed June budget statement. Last week, several parties sought the recall of MLAs from their summer recess, including Sinn Féin, whose Chief Whip in the Assembly, Carál Ní Chuilín said it was "essential in order to question the new Finance Minister Sammy Wilson on the current budget allocations". Ms Ní Chuilin said: "The previous minister, Nigel Dodds has failed to bring forward the June Monitoring Round outcomes for consideration by the Executive in time to be debated. "What each department is allocated as a result of this financial monitoring round is essential not just for ministerial members to know what their spend may be but also for each and every MLA in order to have the opportunity to ratify any re-allocation of funds to priority projects," she said. Firemen Rescue Worker

A worker had to be rescued by firefighters after he was trapped under a bridge in Co Tyrone last night. The incident happened at Drumragh Avenue in Omagh as machinery was being lowered into the River Strule. The man had been working on a hydraulic platform which malfunctioned. Fire and Rescue Service station commander Eamon O'Hagan said: "On arrival crews faced a difficult rescue of a male adult who was carrying out work under a bridge. The hydraulic platform he was working from malfunctioned, preventing him from being able to return to ground level." Another worker managed to free himself.

Threats Hang Over Coleraine Witnesses

Several witnesses to the sectarian murder of Catholic father-of-four Kevin McDaid in Coleraine last month have received death threats, the High Court heard yesterday. The disclosure was made during a bail application by one of the six, Peter Neill, 42, from Westbourne Crescent, Coleraine, who is facing a charge of incitement to hatred. Neill, who was in court, was arrested last month after he was alleged to have shouted abuse at loyalists erecting flags near his home. He was granted bail last week on condition that he resided at an undisclosed address and observed a curfew from 10pm to 7am.

MP's Films Criticised

The DUP MP and former Stormont Junior Minister Jeffrey Donaldson has defended himself following weekend revelations he has repaid £555 he had claimed on expenses for films he watched in London hotels. Speaking last night, Mr Donaldson said that he had only watched cinema films such as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Star Wars Trilogy, not adult movies which the Daily Telegraph said were also covered by the band of service charge on the receipts. Mr Donaldson told the BBC that it had been a mistake to claim the money from the House of Commons and said that he had now repaid more than £650 for the cost of the 68 movies he watched in London hotels while he attended Parliament.

Park Avenue Seeing Stars

A £5 million upgrade for the Park Avenue Hotel in east Belfast paid dividends when it was announced today it had achieved four star status. The family owned 56-bedroom hotel which employs 100 staff has recently completed a makeover and improvements to its bedrooms, bar, restaurant and conference centre. The extra star was awarded following an inspection by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board.

Dental Lab Grows

A Belfast dental laboratory is investing over £15,000 to increase export sales and attract more customers from the Republic of Ireland, with support from Invest Northern Ireland. McDowell and Service provides bespoke products for use in dentistry, including crowns and veneers, as well as dental appliances and implant restorations. The company uses a mixed range of raw materials and high-tech methods of production. Amongst the firm's equipment is a technologically advanced milling machine which enables products such as metal free crowns to be fabricated from a standard dental scan, more efficiently, quickly and accurately than traditional methods. The machine also ensures that all finished products fit to the highest levels of precision and are highly resilient. This external sales project aims to help the company exploit its advanced technology and increase its sales in markets where there is high demand for premium dental products.
