Twelfth 'Shopping' Extravaganza On Offer

Shoppers are being encouraged to support Belfast's retailers and take advantage of special 'Twelfth' holiday opening hours this Monday.

More than two-thirds of shops in Belfast city centre - including both CastleCourt and Victoria Square - have confirmed that they will be open from 12.30pm - 4.30pm.

A full programme of street theatre performances, the 'Festival in an Afternoon', also will provide entertainment for shoppers and visitors.

Councillor William Humphrey, Chairman of Belfast City Council's Development Committee, encouraged people to take advantage of the shops opening on a day on which they traditionally had remained firmly closed.

"The Twelfth historically has been one of the two days each year when shops have not opened, the other being Christmas Day," said Councillor Humphrey.

"However, this year, with the council's support, traders are taking the brave step of opening their doors and doing their bit to overcome the image of Belfast as a 'ghost town' at this time of year.

"With July also the height of the tourist season, the shops opening and the programme of street entertainment will add an extra dimension to the visitor experience," added Councillor Humphrey.

"The arrangement with the Orange Institution is good for trade, good for the economy, good for the Orange tradition and good for Belfast PLC," he concluded.
