Coughlan To Investigate Sparks' Strike

An official investigation has been launched into recent strike action by Irish electricians.

The move has been sanction by Trade Minister Mary Coughlan, however, it is still unclear what format the investigation will take.

A more detailed announcement is expected on the plans soon.

A dispute between electricians and their employers entered a critical phase earlier this month, when thousands of workers downed tool, stalling many high profile projects.

Contractors later rejected a 4.9% pay deal for electricians recommended by the Labour Court.

The Association of Electrical Contractors said it cannot afford any increase.

The 1990 Industrial Relations Act covers the set up of such industrial investigations.

However, the Labour Court's decision has already been agreed with another contractors' organisation - the Electrical Contractors Association.

It has a 50-strong membership of major Irish firms. TEEU union executive have also accepted the proposals.

Electricians left the picket line on 13 July following a week-long strike that affected hundreds of construction and manufacturing sites around the country.
