'Doomed' Shannon Plant Restructures
A rescue plan at the Element Six plant in Co Clare has resulted in the saving of 240 jobs at the facility.
The industrial diamond materials manufacturer announced last month it was to cease manufacturing and distribution operations at the plant with the loss of 370 jobs as part of "major restructuring".
However, the company has now given its backing to a restructuring plan following two days of negotiations in London and at least 240 jobs will now be retained in Shannon as a result.
The company said it hopes all parties can work closely together to agree and implement the plan, which is being supported by the Government through training grants and temporary wage subsidies.
The company had originally blamed the high-cost environment in Ireland, which it said could no longer be sustained.
It is one of the oldest companies in Shannon and was formerly known as DeBeers, a unit of the South African diamonds group.
The news comes as figures emerge showing that more than 17,000 more people signed on the Live Register over the past month, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
The CSO says almost 436,000 people were on the register in July, an increase of 83% over the past 12 months.

Jobs Are Saved in Buy-Out
Many jobs have been saved at a company in Co Antrim. The firm, Westport Resources Limited - which is a driver hire contractor - went into administration at the beginning of the month but now, news of the sale of the company being arranged last week has emerged and all 277 people working at the company will now keep their posts.

Jobs Lost On Foot Of Recession
Over 60 jobs are to go in Co Tyrone as a local timber firm shuts down. Some 17 jobs in retailing have also been lost with the closure of the Belfast branch of a top footwear store. OSC, the Original Shoe Company, is closing 10 stores across the UK. The stores are owned by JJB Sports which has also closed a number of Qube footwear outlets.

30 Jobs To Be Cut At Medical Equipment Company
Approximately 30 jobs are to be lost at a medical equipment company in Ballymoney, County Antrim. The American owned company, Tyco Healthcare, made the announcement today, claiming that the redundancies were due to a drop in demand for their products and that it was unlikely that there would be any improvement for the foreseeable future.

M&S Drivers' Strike Looms
It looks likely today that deliveries to Marks and Spencer stores throughout the UK will be hit by a threatened drivers' strike. Some 100 staff at worldwide courier company DHL's centre in Mallusk near Belfast and two depots in England are considering walking out after a pay freeze, the union Unite said.
