UDR Murder Probed

The historic inquiry team has arrested a man in connection with their probe into the murder of a soldier nearly 40 years ago. Victor Smyth, a part-time lance corporal with the Ulster Defence Regiment, died when a device exploded outside a bar in Portadown, Co Armagh in 1972. He was driving past at the time, on his way home from duty and loyalist paramilitaries were later blamed for the initial attack. Officers belonging to the Historical Enquiries Team which was set up to investigate unsolved murders in Northern Ireland arrested the 56-year-old man last week.

Building Jobs Announced

Around 100 construction jobs at to be created at a Belfast housing development, it has been revealed. The McGinnis Group is set to construct the scheme on a site bought from the administrators of the bankrupt Taggart Holdings. The Saintfield Road development is expected to take up to two years to complete.

Reduce Business Risks

Invest Northern Ireland is to assist local companies to reduce the risks of doing business in today’s volatile market conditions. A free workshop on Business Continuity Planning is being held for companies in the food and drink sector by Invest NI at the Seagoe Hotel, Portadown on 16 September. Speaking at the breakfast event will be Allan Edwards, Director of Corporate Affairs and Corporate Responsibility with the Compass Group, who will speak about how one of the world’s largest foodservice organisations has prepared for a range of events such as swine flu. The workshop will provide companies with advice and guidance about how to best cover the business risks of emergencies including an outbreak of swine flu within the workforce.

Highway Firm Opens New Devision

Urban designer and highway contractor, Emtek, has developed a new construction division, which the Lurgan firm hopes will help it secure more industrial, commercial and residential work. Emtek was established by Eddie McKee in 1994, employing three members of staff. Today the firm, which has been involved in major national infrastructural schemes, employs 50 people.

Marine Eco System In Focus

NI Fisheries Minister Michelle Gildernew has met with Professor Jeremy Jackson, a leading authority on the marine environment. Speaking after the meeting the Minister said: "The meeting provided some very interesting insight into marine conservation from a global perspective. We discussed his experiences regarding protection of the marine environment and ways to deliver a sustainable future for marine users. The important contribution of fisheries to coastal communities and the role of healthy, productive and biologically diverse seas in achieving long term sustainability for fisheries was also on our agenda," she said and noted that she had listened with interest to his views on Marine Conservation Zones and the potential for such zones to enhance fish stocks as well as the environment.

Boost For Cookstown Tenants

Thirty kitchens are to be upgraded in the Sullenboy Park area of Cookstown as part of a £123,000 investment by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE). Cookstown District Manager Ivan Armstrong said the scheme is good news for tenants and underscores NIHE's commitment to improve housing conditions throughout the entire district.

Local conservation groups welcome Marine Bill plans
An alliance of conservation groups, the Marine Task Force Northern Ireland (MTF NI), has welcomed the publication of the UK government’s consultation on its Marine Bill. However, the group said that Northern Ireland’s marine wildlife would be "left behind" unless local government is committed to being part of the UK framework.

Plans Submitted For Bangor Seafront
Plans for the £50 million redevelopment of Queen's Parade in Bangor have been submitted. The significant milestone sees Bangor Marine Ltd, a consortium made up of a number of leading companies including the Karl Group and Farrans, submit a detailed planning application for the Co Down development.
