Nestle to sell Omagh factory to Lakeland Dairies
Nestle has revealed plans to sell off its Omagh plant to Irish firm Lakeland Dairies.
Management at the Omagh site are said to be in negotiation with Lakeland Dairies with an eye to finalising the sale by early April. Nestle are also currently meeting with union representatives in order to arrange the transfer of 62 of the existing workers to Lakeland. Nestle have already signalled their clear intention to form a "close trading relationship" with the Irish dairy firm.
The Omagh plant purchases milk from farmers mainly located in the County Tyrone region, to be made into milk powder. The product then leaves Omagh to travel overseas to another Nestle plant where the milk powder is processed into different milk products.
In recent years, the Omagh site has been hard hit by economic problems such as the knock-on effect of the BSE crisis, which in 1999 forced Nestle to lay off 37 employees at the plant.
