Other NI News In Brief

Busy 'Royal' Day

For the third time in a single day, the Lord-Lieutenant of Co Antrim, has been fulfilling a regal role. Prince Andrew's fourth engagement in NI yesterday saw His Royal Highness again greeted by Joan Christie, (pictured) in her official capacity. The Duke of York was Guest of Honour at an anniversary reception hosted by Lisburn City Council, celebrating 400 years of Lisburn heritage. Arriving at the Island Civic Centre in the city, the Prince also went on to meet Councillor Allan Ewart, Mayor of Lisburn City Council, and Mrs Denise Ewart, Mayoress, who accompanied HRH during the engagement. The royal visitor also took the opportunity to view an exhibition depicting the history of the area over the past four centuries, including the awarding of City Status to Lisburn as part of The Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002. Jeffrey Donaldson the MLA, and Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley, and Edwin Poots, the Minister for the Environment were also among those meeting Prince Andrew. See: Duke Visits 'Spuds' Company

Bail For Massereene Suspect

The man charged with the murders of two soldiers in March has been given bail at the High Court. Brian Shivers, 44, from Sperrin Mews in Magherafelt, is also charged with the attempted murder of six other people. Lawyers for the defendant, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, have argued that his health is seriously at risk. Sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey were shot dead outside Massereene barracks in Antrim by the Real IRA.

'Bomb' Find Probed

A device - described as viable - was last night taken away for examination after it was uncovered in the Waterloo Park area of the Antrim Road in Belfast. A PSNI spokesman said that initial inquiries suggested the object, described as a pipe bomb-type device, was left close to a house overnight. Police are working to establish a motive. Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Jordanstown, a coffee-jar type device was removed for further examination after being found in a car at Rosstulla Drive.

Charity Funds 'Score'

Northern Ireland's soccer team may well be nursing its wounds after last week's defeat in a World Cup qualifier at Windsor Park, but that hasn't stopped fans from Co Antrim 'scoring' a great result for local charity. The 'City of Belfast NI Supporters Club' (which ironically is based in Ballyclare) has just handed over a cheque for £3,265 to the town's Macmillan Cancer Support group. The money was raised at a 'Night at the Riots' in Ballyclare Rugby Club as well as by members who 'went the distance' and 'nodded one into the net' for Macmillan with sponsorship in the Belfast Marathon.

Food & Drink Takes Road South

Seven of the 11 food and drink companies taking part in SHOP 2009 on 28-30 September in Dublin with Invest Northern Ireland, will be pitching for business at the industry's biggest exhibition for the first time. Buyers and other visitors to the show at the RDS in Dublin will be able to sample the products of these newcomers, ranging from natural artesian spring water and organic vegetables, to filled wraps or stuffed mushrooms. Invest NI has supported the show, the Republic's biggest annual food and drink exhibition, from its inception. The newcomers will be aiming to make a positive impact on both the retail and foodservice sectors.

Luas Crash Teen Fights For Life

As separate investigations into the cause continued today, a teenage girl is fighting for her life after this week's Luas/bus crash in Dublin. Questions centre on how the double decker appeared to have had a green light when entering the junction before hitting the Luas tram. Today, the 18-year-old girl is in a critical condition in Beaumont Hospital after undergoing emergency surgery for head injuries sustained in the collision. Preliminary investigations into the crash are understood to show the No 16 bus had a green light as it travelled down O'Connell Street, where the accident happened on Tuesday afternoon.

Antrim Water Station Opened

A new £32m water treatment system has been officially opened at Dunore Point, in Antrim. The plant forms part of the wider Project Alpha, a £110m upgrade scheme of the existing water treatment facilities at Dunore Point, Ballinrees, in Coleraine; Castor Bay, in Craigavon; and Moyola, in Magherafelt. Project Alpha also delivered the construction of three new strategic link mains supplying Ballymoney, Limavady and Lisburn. The scheme, carried out in partnership with Dalriada Water, has been one of the biggest projects undertaken by NI Water. NI Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy said: "I welcome the completion of this major investment project which will deliver an efficient, cost effective and high quality treated water source, safeguarding the water supply infrastructure for the years ahead."
