Unemployment remains steady despite economic gloom
Enterprise Minister Sir Reg Empey has greeted the latest round of unemployment figures as evidence of the resilience of the local economy in the face of adverse economic conditions.
The seasonally adjusted Labour Force Survey figures for period November 01 - January 02 show that there has been a slight increase of 0.3 percentage points in unemployment over the quarter.
Commenting on the figures, Sir Reg said: “Despite some recent gloomy economic news at home and abroad, unemployment has not increased as sharply as we might have expected, given the trading difficulties some companies have reported.
“The long-term unemployed figure stands at 17,000. This is 3,000 or 6.5 percentage points lower than the number recorded for the same group one year earlier. I believe this highlights the fact that government is winning in its efforts to tackle the problem of long-term unemployment, particularly in the black spots."
Additionally, between January and February 2002, the seasonally adjusted total claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) fell by 300 claimants. There are now 37,700 JSA claimants in Northern Ireland, the lowest level since September 1975 and this represents 4.8 per cent workforce. Furthermore, there has been a fall of 2,700 over the year.
The latest estimate from the Quarterly Employment Survey (QES), which measures the number of employee jobs in Northern Ireland, currently stands at the highest employee jobs figure on record.
However, the figures reveal that while between September 2001 and December 2001, there was an increase of 7,820 employee jobs, the number of manufacturing jobs fell by 1,080 over the same period.
