Gala Finale To 'Recession-Buster' Event

It will be a busy weekend for almost 200 influential figures from the business and cultural worlds.

They are meeting in Dublin today for a major economic forum designed to help Ireland emerge from recession and then will enjoy a number of hospitality events, including a reception hosted by President Mary McAleese at Áras an Uachtarain tonight.

A dinner at Dublin Castle will be hosted by the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan tomorrow evening, while many delegates will be in Croke Park on Sunday for the All-Ireland Football Final.

The delegates at the Global Irish Economic Forum are at Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park today however with their numbers including some of the top business figures in the worldwide Irish community.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen said Ireland's relationship with its diaspora will be developed on an ongoing basis.

"These people have come, they've a great sense of loyalty to their country, a great pride in their heritage and in the contemporary world they are very successful people at what they do," Mr Cowen said.

"This is not just a weekend. This is about the structured dialogue with our diaspora on an ongoing basis," he insisted.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin said this afternoon that the Government was trying to reach out to the Irish diaspora to develop global networks, emulating countries

Mr Martin said the conference, which will feature five large sessions and 11 small breakout working groups, is designed to generate ideas to help Ireland's economic recovery and how Ireland can better present itself globally in years to come.

"Above all, we want ideas to come out of this weekend that can add value to what our companies are doing here and how we can attract investment into the country and develop other sectors of our economy," he said.

Those attending the three-day event include billionaire financier and Celtic FC backer Dermot Desmond, management guru Gerry Robinson, former Intel chief Craig Barrett and Qantas Chief Executive Alan Joyce.

Bob Geldof and Riverdance creators John McColgan and Moya Doherty will be among those representing the artistic and cultural worlds.
