Licensed restaurants are food-led businesses that have permission to sell alcohol for consumption on the premises, usually alongside meals. They may serve breakfast, lunch, dinner or a more limited menu, with offerings ranging from familiar British dishes to regional and international cooking. Customers can generally expect table service or counter ordering, seating indoors and sometimes outdoors, and a choice of non-alcoholic drinks as well as alcoholic options such as beer, wine and spirits. Menus, opening hours and service styles vary. Some restaurants take bookings, while others mainly serve walk-in customers; certain venues may also offer takeaway or delivery. Alcohol sales must follow the permissions and conditions attached to the premises licence or other relevant authorisation, including any limits on when alcohol can be sold. Staff may ask for proof of age, and customers under 18 are subject to legal restrictions on buying alcohol.
