Nude Photo Dropped In Tate Porn Row

The Tate Modern has pulled a nude photo of actress Brooke Shields as a child following concerns that the image could be in breach of child pornography laws.

The photo - Richard Prince's Spiritual America - was due to feature in the Tate's Pop Life: Art In A Material World exhibition, which opened today.

The piece is a photograph of a photograph. The original was taken by US photographer Garry Cross in 1975. Brooke Shields' mother commissioned the photo, which was taken when she was just ten years old.

The photo shows Brooke standing naked in a bathtub, with an oiled torso and wearing heavy make-up.

Spiritual America was so controversial that it had been hung in its own room, separately from the other exhibits.

A spokesperson for the Tate confirmed that the room had been temporarily closed while discussions were held with police. It is not yet known if the image will be displayed.

Bosses at the Tate have said that they sought legal advice before displaying the photo.

Police are now consulting the Crown Prosecution Service to determine whether the image breaches the Obscene Publications Act.
