Cameraman Wins Accolade
A cameraman has been honoured for his 'front line' work. Jonathan Young, (pictured here in Afghanistan) an acclaimed documentary lighting cameraman, who is nominally 'based' in Sheffield - but who is more often away filming in the world's conflict zones - has been awarded the Extreme Camerawork award. He received the accolade this week from the Guild of Television Cameramen for shooting Return to Afghanistan, recognising his professionalism on the frontlines of Helmand province in Afghanistan with Ross Kemp.
Murdered PC Remembered
Around 80 officers and police staff gathered with members of the public to mark the 24th Anniversary of the murder of PC Keith Blakelock with a wreath laying ceremony at the Blakelock memorial in Muswell Hill N10. In keeping with tradition, the youngest probationer on Haringey Borough, 19 year-old PC Mounir Ahrazem, laid the wreath, followed by a one minute silence.
Heroes Return
There will be mixed emotions today as soldiers from the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards are returning to base in Hampshire after what a senior officer called a "demanding" Afghanistan tour. The battalion suffered the loss of seven of its soldiers, including its commanding officer, during six months duty in Helmand province. Family members are expected as the 650 troops arrive back in Aldershot.
Coke Hammered By ASA
Posters and leaflets used as advertisements for vitamin-enriched water made by Coca-Cola have been criticised by an industry watchdog. Vitaminwater had "misleading" claims about nutritional benefits, the Advertising Standards Authority said and slogans such as "more muscles than Brussels" and "keep perky when you're feeling murky" were used. The ASA rejected the drinks company's argument that the advertising was "humorous and irreverent". The ASA also found that the drinks contained nearly a quarter of the recommended daily amount of sugar in 500ml but the publicity made it likely that consumers would think the products were "healthy". The adverts must not be used again.
Airlift For Crash Injured
A 10-year-old boy and 65-year-old man have been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on an Aberdeenshire road. Police said a trailer appeared to have become detached from a tractor and collided with their people carrier on the A947, north of Turriff on Tuesday, just before 9am. They were cut free and airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment. A 50-year-old woman and another child, both passengers in the Kia Sedona, escaped serious injury. The Kia was a council-hired taxi on a school run.
Jobs On Screen
Up to 500 new jobs have been promised by a Taiwanese firm that is to build a factory in Northamptonshire. Kenmark, a flat screen TV specialist, will be based in Corby. The jobs will be created over three years. The East Midlands Development Agency has led a group of organisations to help bring the company to the town.
