Call For Inquiry Over Double Suicide
There have been calls for an inquiry after two teenage girls ran away from a 'secure' care home and jumped off a bridge in an apparent suicide pact.
Neve Lafferty, 15, and Georgia Rowe, 14, leapt more than 100ft from the Erskine Bridge near Glasgow on Sunday night.
The pair had been living at a secure unit for troubled girls at the independent, Catholic-run Good Shepherd Centre in Bishopton, Renfrewshire, for about eight weeks.
Police are trying to unravel the motives behind the girls' deaths after one left a 'suicide message' about jumping off a bridge on a social networking website.
Local MP Jim Sheridan has called for an inquiry into how the girls were able to leave their care home unsupervised.
He said: "The relatives and friends of these young girls will be suffering unimaginable horror and grief.
"They will want to know exactly what happened and why a tragedy of this nature took place."
The unit cares for young girls referred to it by council educational and psychological services, social work departments and children's hearings.
A spokesman for the centre said they had been on "apparently happy and productive" weekend outings with relatives.
