Union Offers Royal Mail Last-Minute Deal
The main postal workers union has written to Royal Mail offering a last-minute deal aimed at avoiding strike action.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said that the offer would "help restore customer confidence at a crucial time for the Royal Mail, while addressing outstanding problems of job security, work levels, bullying and reward".
Dave Ward, CWU Deputy General Secretary, said: "We have today written to Royal Mail making it clear that the CWU is ready to issue notice for a national strike as voted for by three quarters of postal workers.
"More importantly, we have offered what we believe is a genuine alternative to reach a lasting agreement. This is an opportunity to avoid a national strike, restore customer confidence and resolve the concerns of staff.
"If Royal Mail really is sincere about reaching an agreement, we expect them to take up this offer for the interests of all involved in the mail industry."
The union has said that if Royal Mail refuses the offer, than strike dates would be announced on October 15. This would mean that the earliest that a strike could take place would be October 22.
Royal Mail said that they are "very disappointed" by the union's action and has called on them to call off the strike threat.
The ongoing dispute was sparked by a failure by the union and the Royal Mail to reach a decision on how best to modernise the service, with the union claiming that jobs and pay cuts are leading to a worsening of the service.
