Internet Traps Robber Who Targeted Women
A 21-year-old man has been jailed for eight years for a series of robberies on lone women.
Adeboye Agoro of Bemerton Estate, London was sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court on 5 October for a series of robberies in the Caledonian Road area of Islington.
He was identified after enquiries showed that he had used one of the stolen credit cards on the Internet.
Between 2 March to 16 May Agoro targeted lone professional women who were walking home late at night and approached them.
He would then pull a knife and threaten to stab the victims or punch them in the face and demand they hand over their handbag.
In one incident, on Monday 20 April at around 11.15pm, the 26-year-old victim, a publisher, was on her way home from work.
She got off the tube at Caledonian Road and was walking along Pembroke street when she realised she was being followed by a man.
Agoro had what appeared to be a knife in his hand. He threatened her and grabbed her bag before she managed to run away from him and call police.
On Tuesday 28 April, just after midnight, a 22-year-old woman was walking along Moreland Mews when she was accosted by Agoro who threatened to 'shank' her if she didn't hand over her bag.
She handed it to him and he ran off towards Caledonian Road, N1.
During the police investigation it became apparent that these crimes were linked as the method used and the suspect description were similar.
He was arrested on 4 June 2009 and subsequently charged with three counts of robbery and remanded in custody until his trial. He was also charged with a further four counts of robbery whilst in custody.
Agoro, pleaded guilty to these offences at court.
Investigating Officer, PC Paul Phillips said: "This was an in-depth and thorough police investigation to find a man who was preying on women in Islington.
"His lengthy sentence should act as a deterrent and send a message that police in Islington are committed to tackling violent criminals."
