Pollution Wipes Out Fish Stocks
Investigations are continuing following a river chemical leak near Stoke-on-Trent.
Following the apparent cyanide pollution on October 6 fish stocks along a 700m section of the River Trent in Staffordshire have been wiped out.
According to the Environment Agency a survey taken on Wednesday found no evidence of living fish.
The agency will carryout further tests on river life and sediment samples will be taken for more detailed analysis.
Environment officers pumped oxygen into the the river between Stoke-on-Trent and Yoxall to greatly reduce pollution levels.
Fish stocks several miles further downstream appear relatively unaffected.
It is believed the cyanide was released into the sewers upstream from the Severn Trent Water Strongford sewage treatment works in Stoke last week which caused problems at the works and resulted in partially-treated sewage also being released into the river. Severn Trent Water are not linked in any way to the chemical.
The Environment Agency said it would prosecute those responsible under the Water Resources Act.
