Welsh Swine Flu Tragedies

A 21-year-old new mum and another woman with underlying health conditions have both died after contracting swine flu. The Welsh Assembly Government confirmed both deaths, which takes the total number of fatalities in swine flu-related cases in Wales to three. The mother, from Monmouthshire, died two weeks after her baby was born by caesarean section. The other woman, 43, did not die primarily from swine flu, doctors said. She had been admitted to Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli from her Carmarthenshire home on 3 October. Her condition deteriorated and she was transferred to intensive care, but died on 7 October.

Lotto Split Four Ways

Four winners shared Wednesday's Lotto jackpot of £2.3 million, Camelot said. The winning numbers were 11, 42, 32, 35, 24 and 05 and the bonus number was 20. The jackpot winners will each collect a prize of £595,593 for matching all six numbers. Nine ticketholders matched five numbers plus the bonus to take home £81,448 while 363 won £1,262 for five numbers. A total of 18,356 matched four numbers to claim £54 each, while 313,735 won £10 for matching three numbers.

London's bus and Tube fares will both rise in 2010, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has announced.

London Fares 'Not Fair'

Bus fares are to go up by 12.7% and Tube fares will rise by 3.9%. Oyster card pay-as-you-go bus journeys are to rise from £1 to £1.20. Meanwhile the price of a seven-day bus pass will jump from £13.80 to £16.60. The Congestion Charge is rising to £10, while Mr Johnson said a £9 charge for those using a new account system would be operational next year.

Extradited Driver Charged

A man who was extradited to Scotland from Spain has appeared in court charged in connection with the death of a father-of-two in a road accident. Mark Fleeman, 32, from Uttoxeter in Staffordshire, died in a van crash on the M74 in Lanarkshire on 4 June. His passenger, 17-year-old Lee Allsup, also from Uttoxeter, was badly injured. Paul Lyons, 28, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court, charged with murder or an alternative charge of causing death by reckless driving.

Mayor To Deliver Low Cost Energy

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has detailed steps to boost locally generated energy to cut carbon emissions, create green collar jobs and save money off fuel bills. To create an energy revolution, the Mayor has detailed a package of initiatives developed in partnership with the London Development Agency, London First and London Councils. These are designed to attract investors whilst helping developers and borough councils to develop more local energy schemes, which can be complex to get off the starting blocks.

Trent Fish Killed

Fish stocks on a stretch of the River Trent in Staffordshire - that was believed to be polluted with cyanide - appear to have been wiped out, experts have said. nvestigations are continuing into the source of last week's chemical leak near Stoke-on-Trent. The Environment Agency said a survey along a 700m section near Stone on Wednesday had found almost no evidence of living fish.

London Bus Drivers Postpone Strike Action
Planned strike action by London bus drivers has been postponed as an "act of goodwill". The strike action was due to take place on Friday and Monday, with drivers walking out across the city's 18 bus companies. Unite the union has called on the bus companies to accept an invitation for talks.

Man Jailed For Attempted Murder Of Pc
A south London man has been jailed for 25 years for tying to shoot a policeman. Michael Mitchell, 32, of Babington Road, Streatham, was convicted of attempting to murder Pc Shaun Callow, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Further Arrest Over East Dulwich Murder
There has been a further arrest in connection with the murder of a teenager in south London. Police were called after midnight on Saturday 29 January following reports of an assault close to East Dulwich rail station.

EDF To Takeover British Energy
The Government welcomed EDF's proposed £12.5 billion takeover offer for British Energy Group and the British Energy Board's recommendation of the offer to its shareholders. The Government has committed to accept the cash offer of 774p per share for its 36% stake held by the Nuclear Liabilities Fund (NLF), subject to certain conditions.
